It is World Read Aloud Day!

Hip, hip, hooray! Today is World Read Aloud Day. I hope you have an awesome day celebrating the power and beauty of words and stories. My students and I are excited to celebrate literacy with students, teachers, authors, and illustrators throughout the day.

Newbery Medalist Katherine Applegate will chat with fifth graders and read an excerpt from The One and Only Ivan

Joanne Levy will read an excerpt from Small Medium at Large and talk about some of her favorite books.

Author-illustrator Leeza Hernandez will read Dog Gone! to my first graders.

Author Ame Dyckman will read to my fifth graders.

Donna Gephart will entertain us and read an excerpt from one of her novels.

Dori Hillestead Butler will connect with my second graders.

Laurel Snyder will celebrate World Read Aloud Day with my students in a few weeks.

We will read poems from Messing Around on the Monkey Bars with students from Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Texas.

  1. You have inspired the Henika District Library (home town of Travis Jonker's school) to celebrate this wonderful day. We invited 4 - 6th grade classes to walk to the library at different times to be read to by staff & the library board president. We also videotaped 11 (this number signifying the number of hours we are open today) community readers, reading their favorite picture book or excerpt from a favorite book. The videos were posted on our website via our library Youtube account and also released a video at the top of each hour for our Facebook followers. A fun day & we will be doing this again next year. Thanks for the heads up on this special day.
