Book Trailer Premiere: The Greatest Adventure by Tony Piedra

Hello, Tony Piedra! Thank you for stopping by to share the AMAZING book trailer for The Greatest Adventure. I cannot wait to share it with readers of all ages.

Tony Piedra: Hi Mr. Schu!  Thank you for inviting me on! I’m so honored and proud to be sharing my picture book debut with you. It’s a project that’s been many years in the making.

I wrote the words in purple, and Tony wrote the words in black. Thank you, Tony!

The Greatest Adventure’s book trailer is a distillation of what I felt like as a kid living in a big city, while dreaming of one day having great adventures in wild places teeming with life, beauty, and mystery.  This childhood sentiment is the seed that sprouted the idea for The Greatest Adventure!

The Greatest Adventure tells the story of a little boy named Eliot who dreams of going on adventures, and his grandpa, El Capit├ín, who thinks his adventures have come to an end.  Together, they learn that an adventure with someone you love can take place anywhere.

Eliot’
s grandpa
once sailed deep, dark seas and wild jungle rivers, but he thinks his real adventures have come to an end when he puts up his old, broken-down boat, the Hispaniola, for sale and  moves in with his daughter and his grandson, Eliot.  Thankfully, there’s always something new to learn, no matter how old you are.

Picture books are magic. The ones I gravitated to as a child opened up new worlds for me.  My favorite children’s book of all time, which I checked out from the little red library in my neighborhood in Houston, TX, where I grew up, was called Album of Sharks by Tom McGowen and illustrated by Rod Ruth.  This book left such a vivid impression on me, that over 20 years later, when I tried to find a copy of the book with absolutely no information other than my childhood memories, I was able to do so because I remembered each and every one of Rod Ruth’s illustrations.  I even snuck in an easter egg in the endpapers of The Greatest Adventure as a small thank you to Rod Ruth’s work.  See if you can find it!

Story is best when it comes from a place that is personal and specific.  Like Eliot I grew up in a big city far away from jungles and wild rivers and deep, dark seas.  My notion of adventure was shaped by stories my father told me about his childhood in the Bahamas.  Stories filled with gliding manta rays and schools of flashing, silver fish.  He told me about looking for sharks with his older brother in a small wooden boat and about swimming in hidden blue holes they found tucked amongst the pine forests, which covered much of their island home.

The Greatest Adventure is my attempt to put together a longing for adventure and the realization of the importance of familial love.  If you have always sought adventure in far-flung wild places, this book might be right for you!

Mr. Schu, you should have asked me about my most recent great adventure!  Last summer I found myself standing alone in the rain on Admiralty Island, Alaska, a 1,500 square mile rock covered in a swath of temperate rainforest and home to the greatest concentration of coastal brown bears (a.k.a. grizzly bears) in the world.  And this island and one bear in particular on it may have become the centerpiece of my next story for children.  Where next?  Who knows!

Tony Piedra has been searching for adventure since he could hold a crayon. He has swum with sharks, met wild bears, and sailed to the moon (all without letting go of that same crayon). In between these adventures, he worked at Pixar Animation Studios building 3D worlds for movies like CocoUp, and Inside Out. The Society for Children's Books Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) awarded him a Portfolio Showcase Honor in 2014. He lives, works, and plays in the San Francisco Bay Area.
