Endling: The First by Katherine Applegate
Hello, Katherine Applegate! It is always a MARVELOUS AND INSPIRING day when you stop by to celebrate books and libraries. You’re going to make a lot of readers happy today when they see Max Kostenko’s cover illustration for Endling: The First. What made you smile the brightest when you saw the cover for the first time?
Katherine Applegate: Gambler, the “felivet,” blew me away! It’s one thing to imagine a sentient catlike species in your mind. It’s quite another to see him come to life so vividly on the cover of a book!
What question were you often asked while sharing Endling: The Last with students?
Katherine: Readers always want to know how I came up with new species. To show them how my narrator, a “dairne,” developed, I share a slide that’s part math equation, part recipe:
After that, students can’t wait to invent their own species!
What are some recently released or forthcoming middle-grade books you want everyone to know about?
Katherine: Just a few I’m loving:
recently published:
FRONT DESK, by Kelly Yang
coming soon:
THE REMARKABLE JOURNEY OF COYOTE SUNRISE, by Dan Gemeinhart (1/8/19)
And though I haven’t seen it yet (hint, hint), I’m looking forward to Gennifer Choldenko’s ONE-THIRD NERD (1/29/19), because I love everything she does.
Please finish these sentence starters:
Byx and Tobble are the truest of friends.
Did you know that wobbyks (they look a bit like fennec foxes) can spin their giant ears like pinwheels?
Why, you ask? Just because they can.
The One and Only Ivan is getting closer to becoming a movie, with Danny DeVito voicing Bob and Angelina Jolie as Stella!
Look for Endling: The First on May 7, 2019.
