Book Trailer Premiere: Truth or Lies: Sharks by Erica S. Perl and Michael Slack

Hello, Erica S. Perl! Welcome back to Watch. Connect. Read. It is always a treat when we get to celebrate books together. Thank you for stopping by to share the book trailer for the Truth or Lie series. I know of so many readers and teachers who are going to LOVE the unique format of this series.

Erica S. Perl: Thanks so much for having me! I always love to visit with you!

What are three of your favorite facts about dinosaurs, sharks, and presidents?

1. Sleeping sharks stay awake to finish good books.

2. George Washington chopped down a cherry tree, then turned its bark into paper for his autobiography.

3. Dinosaurs did not read, which is why they are now extinct.

Actually, none of those “facts” are actually true (though the third one sounds right to me!). In the TRUTH OR LIE books, you read four statements, three of which are TRUE and one of which is a LIE. Then you try to spot the lie, turn the page to find out if you guessed right, and learn even more facts. Cool, right? That’s why we say 75% truth + 25% lies = 100% fun.

Please finish these sentence starters:

I hope the TRUTH or LIE series gets kids excited about reading both fiction and non-fiction! I also hope the TRUTH OR LIE series inspires kids to read informational books and materials with a critical eye and confirm that the things they read are accurate (I’ve found that librarians are awesome at guiding readers toward reliable sources… several librarian friends helped me while I was researching and writing these books!). It’s a really important skill that is worth developing early on. And I hope kids try writing their own TRUTH OR LIE quizzes – it’s a lot of fun.

Michael Slack’s illustrations are so funny! And I love how he creates illustrations that combine drawings and photographs. It’s a really cool illustration style that’s a perfect match for the text.

Did you know Arnold and Louise is a great series for kids who feel ready to tackle chapter books? They’re about the adventures of a bear – Arnold – and a chipmunk – Louise – who are best friends but who see the world very differently from each other. And Chris Chatterton’s illustrations are fabulous. No lie!

Mr. Schu, you should have asked me what TRUTH OR LIE book I want to write next. Hmm, that’s a good question… I’m planning to do one about INVENTORS AND INVENTIONS next.

And I have a question for YOU, Mr. Schu. I’d love to know what you and all the kids you meet in your Ambassador role want me to write more TRUTH OR LIE books about after I finish writing that one!

Thank you for asking! I will find out! :)

Look for Truth or Lie: Sharks! on May 28, 2019, Truth or Lie: Dinosaurs! on July 2, 2019, and Truth or Lie: Presidents! on December 31, 2019.
