The Magical Yet by Angela DiTerlizzi and Lorena Alvarez

Happy Friday! Please join me in welcoming Angela DiTerlizzi and Lorena Alvarez to Watch. Connect. Read. They stopped by to chat with me about The Magical Yet, endpapers, Ollie Heelflip, and picture books. I wrote the words in purple, Angela wrote the words in black, and Lorena wrote the words in orange. Thank you, Angela and Lorena!

The Magical Yet’s cover illustration is a dream come true! I love it so much! The scrumptious color palette, engaging characters, and stunning design are the perfect invitation to the magical journey that lies within the book’s pages. I smile every time I see it.

Lorena Alvarez’s illustrations are a visual delight! They are classic, modern, vibrant and engaging. As a huge fan of her work, it’s such a treat to see my words paired with her art. I think kids are going to love the colorful, diverse and fantastical world that she has created. I know I do!

The Magical Yet is about a special (and adorable) companion who journeys with you through life. Kind of like your own personal cheerleader encouraging patience, persistence and the importance of having a growth mindset. Waiting, learning, trying and missing will hopefully become a bit easier with your Yet by your side along the way.

Yet knows how good you can get and how much work it takes to get there. Yet knows you will, when you think you won’t. And Yet know there’s mistakes – some big and some small –but with Yet you’re sure to get over them all.

Angela DiTerlizzi’s manuscript for The Magical Yet was a delight to work with!! The rhymes are fun and whimsical and the story gave me a lot of space to share my own perspective of what it means to learn something new and the challenges that come with it. I really feel this was a true collaboration and I’m so happy to be part of it.

The Magical Yet’s endpapers is one of my favorite illustrations from this project. I had the opportunity to design this book completely and I wanted to pay attention to the endpapers since they can give you hints about the story and complement the book’s character. The Magical Yet is a book that celebrates everyone’s potential to learn new things and reach their goals and I wanted to make it evident on the endpapers.

Ollie Heelflip…I didn’t know what it was until I saw the videos! It’s really cool that there are many ways to learn new things now, you can receive help from your friends or watch a video made by someone far from home.

Picture books are a place for fun and dialogue. An opportunity to give voice to many experiences, not only from the authors but also from the readers who feel related to their stories.
