Golden Girl by Reem Faruqi

Happy, happy, HAPPY Friday! I'm OVER THE MOON to welcome back Reem Faruqi to Watch. Connect. Read. to share the cover for Golden Girl. Hooray! I wrote the words in purple, and Reem wrote the words in black. Thank you, Reem!

Anoosha Syed’s cover illustration and Molly Fehr’s cover design for Golden Girl is inviting, fashionable, and fun! I love how Aafiyah is wearing a shalwar kameez and has a smirky smile on her face. It makes me want to get to her know her more. I also love how on the book’s spine, the words Golden and Girl have earrings in between them.

Golden Girl tells the story of Aafiyah who brainstorms ways to reunite her family and go through whatever it takes to bring her father back, even if it means hatching a plan that might not be so perfect after all…

Like my other novel in verse, UNSETTLED, this book has some heavy themes, but I threaded hope in there as well as humor, and some irresistible weird-but-true facts.

Aafiyah Qamar is flawed, brainy, sporty, and quirky. Initially, she may not appear as likeable, but she is redeemable. I hope she steals your heart!

Novels in verse tackle tough topics in a tender way. In case you didn’t know, I love alliteration 😊. I love how novels in verse are packed with emotion and how the white space on the pages is not only appealing to my eyes, but also my mind.

Lailah's Lunchbox: A Ramadan Story, Amira's Picture Day, Unsettled, and I Can Help are my books! LAILAH’S LUNCHBOX came out in 2015 and I loved having a book that children could take to school to explain to their teachers and classmates about Ramadan.

AMIRA’S PICTURE DAY (a picture book about the Muslim holiday called Eid), UNSETTLED (my novel in verse), and I CAN HELP (upcoming in August!) all came out in 2021 so it’s been busy!

I’m relieved GOLDEN GIRL is coming out in 2022 and super excited to have another middle grade book out in the world! I can’t get enough of middle grade!

Congratulations, Reem!
