The Extincts: Quest for the Unicorn Horn (The Extincts #1) by Scott Magoon
Please join me in welcoming back Scott Magoon to Watch. Connect. Read.! He stopped by to celebrate his wonderful new graphic novel series, The Extincts. Scott and I discussed Scratch, Dr. Z, the environment, graphic novels, and more. I wrote the words in purple, and Scott wrote the words in black. Thank you, Scott!
The Extincts: Quest for the Unicorn’s Horn tells the story of Scratch, a Sabertooth Tiger in search of family. He is the stubbornly loyal leader of R.O.A.R., a team of de-extincted animals sent on secret environmental missions around the world. This time, the mysterious Dr. Z dispatches them to retrieve a mystical Siberian Unicorn horn from thawing permafrost. They meet good friends—and more than a few enemies—along the way. After they discover they are each the last of their kind, Scratch must either accept that he’s worthy of love or embrace the evil that threatens to tear them all apart forever.
Dr. Z is the brilliant founder of the team—for which each member is grateful. Scratch though reveres Dr. Z as a father figure and strives to impress him—sometimes at the expense of his teammates.
Scott Magoon has illustrated several acclaimed picture books, including the New York Times bestselling Rescue and Jessica: A Life-Changing Friendship by Jessica Kensky and Patrick Downes, Misunderstood Shark by Ame Dyckman, Spoon by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, and The Nuts series by Eric Litwin. He is also the author-illustrator of Breathe and The Boy Who Cried Bigfoot!. He lives in Massachusetts.
Look for The Extincts: Quest for the Unicorn Horn (The Extincts #1) on March 29, 2022.

There is a twist at the end that sets up their adventure in book 2, Flight of the Mammoth.
Graphic novels like many books, can be powerful agents for change—and THE EXTINCTS seeks to raise awareness of extinct and endangered creatures, climate change and what we can do to help our ailing planet to keep humans from going extinct! Oh, and of course to have some fun along the way.
Mr. Schu, you should have asked me why THE EXTINCTS will appeal to young readers. There’s certainly an environmentally-friendly theme to the EXTINCTS series—and much more for readers of all ages. There’s adventure, exotic real-world locations, gadgets, electric vehicles, a little magic and humor (especially puns as they are my jam). Plus, I’ve included 14 pages of non fiction backmatter—including a glossary and facts about each extinct creature and location in the books. There’s a section on what kids can do to help the Extincts save the planet on their own and with their parents. There’s even a related science experiment readers can safely try at home! The books will be printed using soy inks on recycled paper stock.
I’ve had a blast working on these books. From penning the scripts and non-fiction backmatter to designing the characters and vehicles, each step has been a labor of love over the past three years. I hope everyone enjoys meeting the EXTINCTS and will love them as much I as do. Go Extincts!
