Viking in Love by Doug Cenko

Hello, Doug Cenko! Welcome to Watch. Connect. Read.! Thank you so much for stopping by to share Viking in Love’s book trailer. What do you want everyone to know about Viking in Love before pressing play?

Doug Cenko: Hi John! Thank you so much for having me!

Viking in Love is a story about a little Viking named Stig. He’s like most Vikings, only he’s just a tiny bit afraid of the sea. One day, he sees Ingrid, the most fearless Viking he’s ever seen. He wants more than anything to give her a love letter, but of course, she’s out sailing on the sea. It’s a story about conquering your fear, love, and adorable kittens. I hope you enjoy the trailer and the book!

What materials did you use to create Viking in Love’s art?

Doug Cenko: Viking in Love was illustrated digitally using Procreate and Photoshop. As much as I love working traditionally, creating the art digitally is much faster. I miss having finished physical pieces of art, but the trade-off is worth it. There are also additional benefits like having layered files when creating book trailers.

Viking in Love’s endpapers…

I’m glad that you asked about the endpapers. As I was researching Vikings, I came across some incredible Viking artwork. I loved that style of art and wanted to include it somewhere in the book. The endpapers seemed like the perfect spot to include that piece of Viking history. Also, I love when books have additional art on the case cover under the dust jacket. In keeping with the historical Viking theme, when you remove the dust jacket, the case cover was printed to look like an old leather-bound book. And as a hidden bonus, you’re also able to read Stig’s letter to Ingrid.

Stig’s kittens are also a part of Viking history. I discovered that Vikings gave kittens as wedding gifts. Once I heard that, I knew that some kittens had to be included in the book. They’re never named in the book, but in my head they’re called Thor and Loki.

Picture books are my absolute favorite form of literature. I love how a well-written picture book can get across so much story and emotion in so few pages. I hope that you feel that I accomplished that with Viking in Love.

Thank you so much!

Thank you, Doug!
