Caldecott Honor Artist Janelle Washington

Happy Thursday! I'm launching my tenth annual Caldecott series today. Yay!

I asked Doug Salati, Christopher Denise, Michaela Goade, Jason Griffin, and Janelle Washington to each answer two questions and finish two sentence starters. First up is Janelle Washington.

Hello, Janelle Washington! Congratulations on receiving a 2023 Caldecott Honor for Choosing Brave: How Mamie Till-Mobley and Emmett Till Sparked the Civil Rights Movement. I love learning about the CALL. What was running through your heart when the Caldecott committee was clapping and cheering for you?

Janelle Washington: I felt like I would pass out when the Caldecott committee called me and cheered for me. I remember, as a child, my school librarians telling me about Caldecott books. Then, when I was a library assistant, I would showcase the Caldecott winners, so I knew the importance of winning the honor award. I was so elated by the news.

What does receiving a Caldecott Honor for Choosing Brave: How Mamie Till-Mobley and Emmett Till Sparked the Civil Rights Movement mean to you?

Janelle Washington: Receiving this honor award solidifies that I did an excellent job illustrating Mamie's story with care and love. It also gives me a boost of confidence as a new picture book illustrator!

Please finish the following sentence starters:

Libraries are a haven and a community hub. It is a place where my imagination can run wild, a portal to knowledge, and a quiet place to collect my thoughts.

Pictures books are one the greatest gift to humankind.
